A healthy diet plan can help cyclists speed up their rate of recovery (so you feel less sore after a heavy session in the saddle), decrease your risk of injury or illness and of course eating properly will also improve your perfomance on the bike.
Protein
Cycling is a sport that requires not only endurance and stamina but also explosive power, explosive power comes from muscle. In order to build muscle you need to train hard and consume protein, protein is most abundant in meat – chicken breast, steak, nuts can also be a good source of protein. If you only go cycling at weekends a healthy diet will probably be adequate to support your health and cycling gains, if you cycle more frequently and do additional exercise such as weight training, you probably want to consider some form of protein supplementation.
If your cycling long distances over the whole day your body will not only burn fat and carbohydrate, it will also burn muscle and protein so it is important to make sure you do not just consume carbs but also protein through out the day. You could look to a protein drink, the body utilises protein in different ways. Whey protein can be absorbed very quickly by the body where as other proteins can take longer for your body to utilise, choose a protein drink that offers both slow and fast release protein.
Vitamins
When you do any form of exercise your body produces free radicals, free radicals can be harmful to cells with in your body. To counteract the effect of free radicals you should ensure you consume antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals.
Powerful antioxidents include vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C. Antioxidants can also help prevent cancer and heart disease.
